'Lightning in a Bottle': Jim Parsons Won't Consider a Big Bang Theory Reboot (2024)

According to Jim Parsons, 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory were enough. People reports the award-winning actor recently appeared on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace and shut down the idea of rebooting the series anytime soon. The Big Bang Theory aired on CBS from 2007-2019.

"As we sit here now, no, but I also I would I never say never to anything, because life just changes so much," Parsons said. "You know, one of the things is that it was so special as what it was as what it is. And they call it lightning in a bottle for a reason, and you can be certain it wouldn't be that. And so why would we be doing it? I don’t know that’s how I feel on that right now. But like I say, God willing, life is very long,” he added.

Parsons, who is currently starring in the revival of Our Town on Broadway, won four Emmy awards and one Golden Globe award for playing Sheldon Cooper in the series. His character was so iconic that CBS created a spin-off series, Young Sheldon, which in 2024 completed a seven-year run. Parsons served as the narrator of the series.

Young Sheldon Gave Jim Parsons Closure

In a previous interview with People, Parsons said the series finale of Young Sheldon gave him closure he hadn’t realized he’d needed. “All those actors and writers and the crew on Young Sheldon are so dear. To get back and be in their space as a very welcomed guest…it was just really sweet,” Parsons said of appearing as Sheldon in the finale with Mayim Bialik, who played his wife Amy Farrah Fowler.

A Max Spinoff Series

While Parsons isn't considering a reboot, there is no shortage of spinoff series as another is in the works at Max. The new series has reportedly added Kevin Sussman, Brian Posehn and Lauren Lapkus to star in the Big Bang Theory spinoff, which is still in the early stages of development. Although the specifics of the characters were not revealed, it’s assumed that Sussman, Posehn and Lapkus will be the headliners of the series.

By casting the three actors in the lead roles, it can be gleaned that the spinoff may take place in the comic book store featured in the original series. Sussman played Stuart Bloom in The Big Bang Theory, a character introduced in the second season. His character became a regular in Season 8 until the end of the series.

Lapkus was a recurring character in the last two seasons of the series, playing Denise, who also worked at the comic book store and became Stuart’s girlfriend. Posehn was featured in the show starting in Season 6 and was a recurring character by Season 10, playing Bert Kibbler, a professor and fan favorite.

Premiering Oct. 17, 2024, on CBS is another Big Bang Theory spinoff called Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage starring Montana Jordan and Emily Osment as Georgie and Mandy. The show will pick up right where Young Sheldon left off, said Osment in a previous interview.
